How Does It Work?

Really simple. All the effort has already been done. This includes the milling of the grains, the weighing of the hops, mashing in, sparging, the boil with the hop additions, etc. The only thing left for the brewer to do is to ferment the wort into beer.

For the beginner with no equipment, the kit allows this to be done all-in-one, without the need of a fermenting vessel, an airlock, etc. The kit, along with the pressure release cap, was designed to allow fermentation to be done inside the cube itself. All you have to do is to break the seal on the cube, pitch the yeast into the cube and screw on the pressure release cap. Let the beer (it is called “beer” once you add the yeast to the wort) sit at room temperature, in a dark area (like your pantry) for 10 to 14 days and your beer is ready to be bottled.

Once the beer is ready to be bottled, you just sanitize some bottles (empty soft drink bottles, sanitised with something like Jik or a special solution like Milton’s, work really well), add a bit of sugar to each bottle and pour in your beer. Seal the bottles, let them sit for a week and your beer is ready!

For the more experience brewers, the wort can be handled just like any other wort made at home. It can be poured into a fermenting vessel, fermenting using your favourite style-specific yeast at the correct temperature in your fermentation chamber. It can be clarified, filtered, lagered and kegged, if you would prefer.

The Fresh Wort Kit vs Traditional Kits

The FWK differs from a traditional “kit and kilo” kit in a very important way. Because the FWK is never dehydrated or concentrated into a syrup, the loss of quality is not experienced when brewing a FWK. This translates in a brighter and more pronounced hop flavour and aroma without the associated bitterness (increase in IBUs).

Also, with the FWK you know exactly what you are getting. Ingredients printed on the label are exactly as advertised. With nothing added to the FWK other than water, matled barley and hops, the FWK is all natural and even conforms to the Reinheitsgebot laws, written in the 1500’s.

Finally, because it is a true all-grain brew, the FWK allows endless modification, tweaking, fine-tuning and adapting of the wort to suit your perfect style. Don’t like to use the included yeast? Use your own! Want to swap out the hops for something more to your liking? Go for it! Want to dry hop your lager for more pronounced flavour and aroma? Go for it! The possibilities are endless…

The Fresh Wort Kit

Our primary product is a fresh wort kit (FWK). This kit is an all-in-one solution for people considering homebrewing, yet they do not want to spend thousands of Rands on an expensive setup right away. The FWK includes a 20l “cube” of wort (this is what we call unfermented beer), a packet of brewer’s yeast as well as a pressure release cap. This allows you to ferment your beer at home inside the cube, without the need for a fermenter with airlock and all that equipment you would otherwise need.

For existing homebrewers who are looking to move away from the traditional “kit and kilo” brew kits, this FWK provides them with the opportunity to see what difference they can expect when moving to all-grain brewing without spending the money associated with all-grain (or even BIAB) brewing. Because the fresh wort is never concentrated, the FWK provides a way to taste and experience homebrews knowing there will be no “extract twang”, which is the downfall of many canned kits.

For experience brewers, this FWK provides a quick and easy way to get some homebrew in the bottle or on tap, without the associated time, effort and energy spent in a traditional brew day. Need a beer on tap in a week or two’s time, but you don’t have the 5 hours to spend on a full brew day? Simply decant the cube’s contents into your own fermenter, add your preferred yeast and ferment it at your preferred temperature. How does a 2-minute brew day sound?
